‘Dhoni mania was so big that you had to pick him…He replaced me in all formats’, Dinesh Karthik recalls

Karthik had marked a comeback to the Indian T20 lineup in 2022 and was also a part of the T20 World Cup squad owing to his slog overs hitting for RCB in IPL.

India wicketkeeper batter Dinesh Karthik has opened up on his competition with former India captain MS Dhoni for a place in the Indian lineup. The duo made their debuts for the national team back in 2004 but while Dhoni went on to captain the side over a decade and feature for India in 538 games across formats, Karthik remained in and out of the Indian team owing to the former establishing his place in the XI.

“I made my debut before him. We went together on an India A tour and from there I got picked to the Indian team,” Karthik shared on the RCB podcast. “That was the first time I played a match together with him. I did so well that they picked me for the Indian team. From there, they went on another trip, there was a ODI tournament where he just blasted it there with boundaries and sixes. The world was still getting used to something like that, it was that sort of thing.”

A 2013 law was supposed to make it easier for descendants of expelled Portuguese Jews to obtain citizenship. But its loose rules allowed a lucrative business to emerge, which is now at the heart of a judicial investigation.

For days, in August 2022, the Lisbon register office was in chaos. Though it is usually less busy at that time of the year, queues formed in front of the doors, even after the offices had closed. Equipped with folders, thermoses and snacks, people lined up starting around 7 pm and stayed until the morning, to be sure they were there when the office opened. By 9 am, they would enter to file an application, and then return to the queue to file another and another, up to 20 on a good day. All of them were lawyers, and all of them were lining up for a specific purpose: to obtain Portuguese passports for clients scattered around the world.

But what caused this logjam, denounced as "untenable" by Portuguese officials? The reason is that as of September 1, 2022, the conditions for obtaining Portuguese nationality for descendants of Sephardic Jews – Jews from the Iberian Peninsula – were considerably reduced. This was due to the reworking of an article in a law approved nine years earlier by the Assembly.

Initially, this piece of legislation seemed to be born auspiciously. On May 31, 2013, Portuguese MPs meeting at the Sao Bento Palace, the seat of the Portuguese Assembly, unanimously approved a modification of Portugal's nationality law. This extremely rare consensus was worthy of a vote presented as a "historic gesture," aimed at righting a wrong that was more than 500 years old: the immense harm caused by King Manuel I (1469-1521) to his kingdom's Jewish population.

According to historians, the monarch had no particular hostility toward this community, but he wanted to marry Isabella of Aragon, the daughter of the Catholic king of Spain. In 1492, King Ferdinand II expelled all the Jews from Spain, more than 100,000 people. A clause in the future marriage stipulated that Manuel I had to do the same, and he did so at the end of 1496, but with a slight modification. In order not to lose these inhabitants, many of whom belonged to the elite – bankers, doctors, merchants and scholars – he forced them to convert to Christianity, then forbade them from leaving the territory. Originally, only a handful of families (30, according to Alexandre Herculano, a historian of 19th-century Portugal) are thought to have left, out of the 40,000 Jews in the kingdom. This was a small number of people, even though their size increased significantly after the horrific pogrom against the Jews of Lisbon in 1506 and the subsequent rise of the Inquisition
